Over 20,000 Russian Soldiers Killed In The Last Five Months

US intelligence officials have reported that over 20,000 Russian soldiers have been killed, and more than 80,000 injured, in just five months of fighting in Ukraine.

The majority of these casualties occurred during the brutal trench warfare in the small eastern city of Bakhmut, which Russia has repeatedly claimed it was on the brink of capturing.

However, despite these claims, the city remains elusive, and the fight for it continues to rage on.

White House national security council spokesperson, John Kirby, confirmed that Russia has failed to seize any strategically significant territory, and the attempt to take Bakhmut has come at an incredibly high cost.

Kirby also noted that about half of the casualties were from the Wagner mercenary group, rather than the Russian military, with many of them being sent into battle without proper training or leadership.

The losses suffered by the Russian military are staggering, overshadowing even some of the bloodiest battles of World War II.

Kirby was quoted as saying that it was “three times the number of killed in action that the United States faced on the Guadalcanal campaign in World War II”.

The figures also represent a significant increase in Russian casualties, even from the bloody first days of the war.

Ukrainian forces are still holding out in a corner of Bakhmut, and although the situation remains difficult, they are still counterattacking against Russian soldiers.

Control of a vital supply line to the west of the city is fiercely contested, with the road serving as the last vital supply line for Ukrainian troops fighting on the ground in the region.

The fight for Bakhmut is significant in the context of the larger conflict between Russia and Ukraine.

If Bakhmut falls to Russia, it could give them a route towards bigger towns to the west, including Kramatorsk.

However, after months of heavy losses, Moscow’s bitter push for the shelled-out ruins of this provincial town feels more symbolic than strategic.

The conflict in Ukraine has been a long and bitter one, with many innocent civilians caught in the crossfire.

The human cost of the war has been devastating, with families torn apart and communities destroyed.

The loss of so many lives on both sides serves as a stark reminder of the true cost of war, and the need for peaceful resolution of conflicts.
