Over 40 Dead in Weekend Attack on Sudan Hospital Near Conflict Zone, WHO Confirms

An attack on Al Mujlad Hospital killed over 40 people including children and healthcare workers amid Sudan conflict.

More than 40 people, including children and healthcare workers, were killed in an attack on a hospital in Sudan over the weekend, the World Health Organisation’s head said on Tuesday.

The Al Mujlad Hospital in West Kordofan, located near the frontline between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces, was struck on Saturday. The two forces have been engaged in fighting since the outbreak of conflict in April 2023.

WHO Director General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus condemned attacks on health infrastructure, calling for an end to such violence, though he did not assign blame for the incident.

The WHO’s Sudan office reported that six children and five medics were among the dead and described extensive damage to the hospital facility.

Human rights group Emergency Lawyers accused an army drone of targeting the hospital, stating on Sunday that nine people had died, a figure lower than the WHO’s reported death toll.
