Over 70% Of Inmates Now Registered On NIMC database — NCoS

The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) has verified that the majority of inmates nationwide have been successfully incorporated into the National Identity Management Commission’s (NIMC) database, refuting recent media claims suggesting otherwise.

In a statement released by its Public Relations Officer, Umar Abubakar, the NCoS revealed that as of June 7, 2025, 59,786 out of 80,879 inmates, roughly 74 percent, have been enrolled in the NIMC system. The service credited this achievement to the joint efforts between NCoS and the identity management agency.

The statement rejected assertions circulating in certain media outlets that the National Identity Number (NIN) registration process had not yet started in custodial centres, labeling such reports as “misleading” and “factually incorrect.”

Abubakar stated that the registration of the remaining inmates is actively progressing and that sufficient measures have been established to ensure the smooth completion of the process across all correctional facilities.

He underscored the NCoS’s dedication to integrating inmates into the national data framework as part of comprehensive rehabilitation, reintegration, and digital inclusion programs.

“The NIN registration of inmates in our custodial centres is not only ongoing but has recorded significant progress,” the statement read. “The Service remains committed to the full integration of inmates into national data systems, including the NIN, as part of broader efforts to promote rehabilitation, reintegration, and digital inclusion.”

The NCoS also urged media organizations to confirm information with relevant authorities prior to publication, cautioning that the spread of inaccurate reports could misinform the public and hinder the agency’s efforts.

A Gentle Reminder: Every obstacle is a stepping stone, every morning; a chance to go again, and those little steps take you closer to your dream.

Today's Quote

“Here’s to the crazy ones. The misfits. The rebels. The troublemakers. The round pegs in the square holes. The ones who see things differently. They’re not fond of rules. And they have no respect for the status quo. You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them. About the only thing you can’t do is ignore them. Because they change things. They push the human race forward. And while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius. Because the people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world, are the ones who do.”
