Oxford University Honours Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala

Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, the Director-General of the World Trade Organization (WTO), is one of the six recipients of honorary degrees from the University of Oxford.

Professor Salim Yusuf, Anoushka Shankar, Warren East, Sir Demis Hassabis, and Sir Michael Palin are among the other honorees.

The honorary degrees will be given to each of them on Wednesday, June 19, 2024.

Okonjo-Iweala is the seventh Director General of the World Trade Organization, and he is an economist from Nigeria.

As the first African and woman to hold the role, she assumed office in 2021.

Nigeria’s second-highest honor, the Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger (GCON), was bestowed upon Dr. Okonjo-Iweala in 2022.

She co-chairs the Global Commission on the Economics of Water and is a member of the World Economic Forum’s Board of Trustees.

The economist had previously held the position for seven years, throughout two terms, as Nigeria’s Finance Minister. She also had a brief stint as Foreign Affairs Minister.

She has received many honors, and in 2019 the American Academy of Arts and Sciences elected her as an International Honorary Member.
