Peter Obi: Resignation Wave Hits PDP As More Politicians Dump Party

Following the resignation of the former governor, Mr Peter Obi, from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the Anambra State chapter of the PDP has seen a wave of resignations.

On Wednesday, Peter Obi, a presidential candidate, resigned from the PDP and withdrew from the party’s presidential primary.

Obi’s resignation was based on irregularities in the processes leading up to the party’s presidential primary election which he observed.

His actions were reported to have dimmed the zeal and ambition of some of the party’s national and state assembly candidates, as it is believed that Obi’s popularity in the state has a way of positively affecting other candidates of his party.

Mr Valentine Ozigbo, the PDP’s governorship candidate in Anambra’s November 2021 governorship election who was also competing for the Senate, has stepped down from the race.

Former national assembly members Valentine Ayika and George Ozodinobi are also among those who quit and resigned from the party.

In his resignation letter to Senator Iyorchia Ayu, the party’s National Chairman, Ozigbo claimed that the party had been hijacked by three senatorial candidates and their associates.

Senator Uche Ekwunife, Senator Stella Oduah, and Chris Uba, the self-styled godfather of Anambra politics, are among those running for the Senate, according to him.

Ozigbo said: “I wish to bring to your attention a series of retrogressive developments in our great party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Anambra State, particularly in Anambra South.

“Sir, I would like to state this clearly. The actions of Chris Uba and Linus Ukachukwu, with the support of Uche Ekwunife, and Stella Oduah, and a few others are the reasons PDP in Anambra may end up fielding no candidate in the 2023 elections.”

As a result, he declared his exit from the primary. According to a source, he is also leaving the party.

Ayika and Ozodinobi, both National Assembly candidates, dropped out of the primary and resigned from the party.

However, a source within the Anambra PDP told DailyPost that more important politicians in the state are expected to abandon the party in the coming days.

According to the source, Peter Obi abandoned the party in rage because Uba and others were attempting to disgrace him in the state while he battled his fellow presidential aspirants.

The source said, “More people will leave before the end of this week. It is true that PDP in Nigeria has problems, but the problem of Anambra PDP is far more than that of the national. It is still the reason they have not held a primary election for any position, till today.

“The plot is for all Obi line up to move en mass, and join Labour Party, from where they will give PDP a fight.”
