During a recent flight landing, a cargo plane went off the runway, split in half, and got covered in thick smoke.

The event occurred yesterday, April 7, while the DHL cargo plane was landing at San Jose’s international airport in Costa Rica.

The airport was closed as a safety measure, but no crew members were hurt in the incident.

The airplane slid, tilted, and broke in half upon landing, exposing its cargo, according to Hector Chaves, director of the Costa Rica Fire Department.

Me Chaves said, “Units mobilized to remove the pilot and co-pilot.

“Then they applied foam to prevent a spill and now they are working on an earthen dike to avoid any fuel from reaching the drainage system.”

The Boeing 757 had taken off from Juan Santamaria Airport, just west of the capital, with the destination of Guatemala City, but had to return due to a hydraulic system malfunction.

At the time, the DHL spokesman, Daniel McGrath said the business was working with airport staff to reposition the plane so that other flights could continue.
