The Ekiti State Police Command has detained a 65-year-old individual named Olugbenga Akinola for allegedly providing counterfeit university certificates to students within the state.
The Police Commissioner, Joseph Eribo, shared this information during a press conference at the command’s headquarters in Ado-Ekiti, the state capital, on Thursday, April 17, 2025, stating that the suspect, along with another person, Sunday Adesanmi, claimed to operate an affiliate center linked to Kwara State University.
The CP explained that the suspect, widely known as a “professor,” deceived numerous students by admitting them and awarding university degrees, including Master’s degrees, over several years.
He mentioned that one of the victims, upon visiting the main campus of the institution in Kwara State, was told that the certificate he possessed was fraudulent and not issued by the university.
“Based on credible intelligence received on 18/02/2025 by detectives of this department, a syndicate was discovered to be illegally and unlawfully operating a Kwara State University study center in Ado-Ekiti, where several Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees were issued to unsuspecting members of the public,” the CP stated.
“They both conspired to defraud some students and issued fake certificates. The university authorities were consulted, and they denied any connection with the center and its operators.
Eribo revealed that the sexagenarian and his accomplice have been brought before a court for charges related to fraud, impersonation, and other offenses.
The Commissioner of Police also disclosed that the command apprehended at least seven suspects in connection with allegations of raping minors throughout the state.
He emphasized that the command, under his leadership, remains committed to ongoing efforts to ensure the state is safe and secure for its residents.
While urging residents to provide the police with reliable information about criminal activities in their areas, Eribo assured the public that the command would take all necessary measures to eliminate criminal elements from the state.
