Police Arrests Bull After Killing 60-Year-Old Woman

The Khayega police has arrested a bull at the police station after it trampled a woman to death in Kakamega County, Kenya.

The bull’s owner was also detained and is presently being held while authorities investigate the incident.

Last Friday, while its owner, Josphat Bilimo, was driving it back from a match, the bull nicknamed “Tusker”, reportedly got loose, charged at three ladies from Lutoto village, and killed one of them by trampling her under its feet.

According to reports, the bull struck the 60-year-old victim known as Felistus Luda as she tried to escape the attack.

The woman was pursued by the bull as she tried to run away for safety, according to Mr Bonventure Munanga, the director of the Kakamega County Bullfighting Association, who confirmed the occurrence on Tuesday, July 5.

Mr Munanga said, “The woman could not run fast enough since she had sustained an injury in the accident and she was unfortunately killed by the bull.”

Police were called in to save the bull from locals who intended to hack it to death and split its meat, according to Mr Robert Makau, the sub-county police commander for Kakamega East.

He said, “The DCIO is handling the investigations. The owner of the bull will appear in court on Thursday to face charges related to negligence in handling the animal.”

According to Mr Munanga, the bull’s owner made an effort to arrange a settlement with the woman’s family outside of court.

“He agreed to meet the burial expenses, but villagers were planning to attack the bull and kill it as dictated by tradition. The bull is supposed to be killed and the meat shared out to be eaten.”

At the police station, the bull was tied to a nearby tree.

The event has highlighted the safety concern around the well-known bullfighting location in the western region, which draws sizable audiences.

Bull owners in Kakamega County were to meet with Mr Munanga to discuss safety issues related to bullfighting games, he said.
