The Nasarawa State Police Command has dismissed claims suggesting that more than 30 female students from the Federal University, Lafia, were sexually assaulted during a recent bandit attack.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, August 5, the Command’s Public Relations Officer, Ramhan Nansel, labeled the allegations as untrue, asserting that investigations found no evidence to substantiate the claims.
“That report is false. Bandits entered the school and raped over 30 female students? Our findings show that the report is not true,” Nansel said.
He explained that the police contacted the university’s Chief Security Officer, information officer, and multiple students, none of whom corroborated the reported incident.
“We also spoke with some students. They said nothing of such happened. If it truly happened, the students would be vocal about it,” he said.
Nansel confirmed that a robbery took place on July 27 in the student village area, during which a mobile phone, power bank, and handbag were stolen from a student named Jennifer. He also noted that one male student sustained injuries while trying to flee.
“There was no report of rape. That was the report we had. Over 30 female students raped? Haba! If there was, there’s no need to hide it; we are not the cause,” he added.
