Police Officer Guns Down Four Officers, Regrets Sparing One, Over Alleged Relationship With His Lover

Mohammed Bello, the police officer has reportedly murdered his coworkers in Maiduguri, Borno State, claiming the officers were having a romantic relationship with his lover and mother of his children.

After gunning down four officers within the police college quarters of Borno Police Headquarters in the state capital on Friday, March 4, the officer was apprehended.

Bello speaking to The Punch, just before surrendering to the cops, stated that he regretted sparing the life of a senior officer who he alleged also had a romantic involvement with the mother of his children.

He said, “The OC, Provost, is still alive? I wish I saw him when I had the AK-47 with me. I regret not killing him, Wallahi. He ruined my family and I desperately wanted to kill him. He made my wife leave my house without giving me a fair hearing.”

He allegedly threatened to kill the Officer in Charge, Provost, Mobile Police Base 6, Maiduguri, for destroying his relationship.

On suspicion of having romantic encounters with his lover, he killed three riot police officers.

After being hit by a stray bullet from the suspect’s rifle, a fourth victim was also declared dead.

Bello was also accused of injuring his brother-in-law, who is also a police officer, by setting fire to his home and two other apartments.

The suspect had been living with the woman for about ten years without meeting the conditions required to make her legally married to him. He was previously attached to the Borno State deputy governor’s personal security and was recently transferred to the headquarters of the mobile police base as a quarter guard due to an alleged mental disorder.

This is claimed to have caused a rift between them, with Bello accusing his partner of having sexual encounters with other men as a result of the circumstance.

Nevertheless, the incident occurred at 7:30 p.m. on Friday when he walked up to her noodle stand and meet three police officers there, then confronted her on who they were.

According to a local citizen, Adam Usman, Bello grew furious at one of the police officers’ response and accused them of having an affair with his lover before opening fire on them, killing them instantly.

Mr. Adam said, “I was there at the Commander’s Market when the incident took place, though I was in the officers’ mess. My friend called my line and I left on time to witness the happening. When Oga Bello killed the three officers, everybody, including his wife took to their heels, leaving behind their two young children. He took the smallest child in his arms and walked straight to the house of his brother-in-law, who is also a police officer.”

It was also discovered that his lover had moved out of the barracks and into the apartment of her senior sister, whose husband is also a police officer.

While confirming the event, Borno State Commissioner of Police, Abdu Umar, said the case is still under investigation and that the accused has been transported to Abuja for further investigations.

CP Umar said, “Yes, we woke up to this unfortunate incident but we are still investigating the matter to know the truth. The suspect has been flown to Abuja for further investigation. We shall make our findings known to the general public when the investigation is completed.”
