Police To Investigate Death Of Suspected Cultist In Cell

A suspected cultist passed away in a police cell, prompting the Ogun State Police Command to announce that an investigation has been launched.

According to a statement made public by the command’s spokesperson, SP Omolola Odutola, on Tuesday, November 18, 2023, the police launched a covert operation in response to an intelligence report indicating that suspected cultists on the command’s wanted list were in the Atoyo area of Sagamu. Two suspected cultists, identified as Oduyiga Seyi Samson “m,” 39, and Gbenga Adejoke “m,” both well-known members of the Buccaneer and Eiye fraternity, were taken into custody.

According to Odutola, during questioning, Seyi and Gbenga confessed to being members of the forbidden Buccaneer and Eiye Confraternity Secret cult. Seyi acknowledged that in 2015, he was initiated.

Seyi was brought back to Eleweran in Abeokuta on Thursday, November 23, 2023, after being charged with cult-related activities. Odutola refuted claims that Seyi died after being subjected to severe torture by members of the police command. The deceased was scheduled to be arraigned before a special court on cultism case in Isabo, Abeokuta, on Thursday, November 23, 2023, but the honourable court did not meet.

Seyi was supposed to be returned to court on Friday, November 24, 2023, which is the next day the court is scheduled to convene.

“However, on Friday, 24th November, at about 0500 hours, Seyi went berserk, shouting, biting with teeth, and assaulting other suspects in the cell until he got exhausted. Other suspects in the cell alerted policemen on duty. He was taken to the police hospital and later to Ijaye General Hospital Abeokuta, along with other suspects he gave bites in the cell for medical treatment against infection. Other suspects were treated and discharged, but Seyi, while on medical attention, later gave up the ghost.”

She stated that more information would be released by the Police as soon as the autopsy report on the deceased person is released.

The police spokeswoman went on to say that the Ogun police command is steadfast in its observance of basic human rights legislation, especially with regard to how suspects are handled.

She emphasised that using torture is completely against its policies and guidelines.

‘’Ogun state police command is well versed in the legal framework that safeguards the rights of individuals in custody, free from all forms of cruel, inhuman, or degrading treatment” Odutola said.
