President Buhari Faces Protest As He Visits His Native State

A visit by President Buhari to his home state of Katsina was disrupted by unhappy protesters today, January 26th.

According to the Daily Trust, state residents who claimed that the current administration’s economic policy is ineffective protested in Kofar Kaura, Kofar Kwaya, and Yahaya Madaki Way.

They expressed dissatisfaction over the naira redesign strategy, the lack of fuel, inflation, and the lack of security.

A local told Daily Trust: “My name is Mustapha Muhammad Boss. What happened was, after President Muhammadu Buhari has commissioned the underpass, some youths which we don’t know where they came from, begin to chant ‘Bamuyi’, stoning security operatives and branded APC vehicles as well as setting tyres on fire.

“That is why as you can see, we decided to close our shops for safety. This act is improper and condemnable because it is affecting those that have nothing to do either with the visit or the party.”

According to ThisDay, some of the demonstrators began hurling stones at the gathering soon after President Buhari inaugurated a few particular state-run projects.

They were yelling “We don’t need you,” “We no go do,” and “We are not supporting APC” as they burned tires along Yahaya Madaki Way, just a few meters from the recently completed underpass project. However, Security forces used tear gas to scatter them.

Abdul Suleiman, an eyewitness, told the newspaper that the demonstrators began stoning some vehicles at the scene while screaming “Bamuyi,” a Hausa phrase that means “we are not interested.”

He said: “Shortly after President Muhammadu Buhari inaugurated the underpass, some residents of this area came out and started throwing stones at some vehicles at the venue. Before we knew it, they started burning tyres on the road.”

Additionally, it was claimed that several locals booed President Buhari as he drove in a convoy to the newly built Revenue House for his inauguration along the IBB route in the Katsina metropolitan region.

Tear gas was used by the police and other security personnel to disperse the protesters, and the surroundings are now back to normal.
