Over his sexual assault case, Prince Andrew of the United Kingdom has resigned as an honorary member of the Royal & Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews, one of the world’s most prominent golf clubs.

The move was made Friday by the club in St. Andrews, Scotland, two weeks after Andrew was stripped of his honorary military titles and philanthropic positions in the wake of a civil lawsuit brought in the United States by a woman who claims she was forced to have sex with Andrew when she was 17.

“I can confirm that the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews has received notification that the Duke of York will relinquish his honorary membership, We respect and appreciate his decision,” the club said in a statement.

Andrew, well known as the Duke of York, rejects the charges and has requested a jury trial in the federal court action filed in New York.

Buckingham Palace announced in a statement on Jan. 13 that the decision to remove Andrew’s military titles and charity posts was made with his mother, Queen Elizabeth II’s, “approval and agreement.”

After a catastrophic BBC interview that fuelled controversy about his friendship with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, the prince quit performing royal duties two years ago.

Earlier this month, the palace stated that “the Duke of York will not continue to undertake any public duties and is defending this case as a private citizen.”

Prince Andrew is also expected to quit using the title ‘His Royal Highness,’ or ‘HRH,’ in any official role.

Other members of the royal family will take on the duke’s current responsibilities. The specific details are yet to be revealed.

The Royal & Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews was created in 1754 and aided in the administration of golf regulations for 250 years before being passed over to another organization. It is still a private golf club with over 2,400 members around the world.
