Omoyele Sowore, a politician and activist, led a group of protesters to MTN Nigeria’s headquarters in Abuja to express their displeasure with the country’s growing mobile data prices.
Online videos show Sowore and other demonstrators marching into the building while shouting, “MTN ole, MTN ole!” and accusing the telecom company of unfair pricing practices. The protest attracted onlookers’ attention and swiftly gained popularity on social media.
The demonstrators called on the company to review its pricing structure and lower the cost of internet access for Nigerians, expressing their displeasure with what they called exploitative data tariffs.
Participants stated that many citizens, especially students, young professionals, and small business owners who rely heavily on internet services, are finding it more and more difficult to stay connected due to the rising cost of data.
Speaking to the demonstrators, Sowore stressed the importance of accountability and called on regulatory bodies to step in. He maintained that in today’s digital economy, having access to reasonably priced internet is essential rather than a luxury.
MTN Nigeria had not yet released an official statement regarding the protest as of the time of reporting. However, the incident has spurred broader online discussions about Nigerian consumer rights and telecom pricing.
