Marcus Rashford finished calmly in FC Barcelona’s 2-0 victory over Getafe CF on Saturday, coming off the bench to put the team one step closer to winning La Liga.
With five games left, Barcelona took full advantage of the mounting pressure following Real Madrid’s point loss to Real Betis to increase their lead at the top of the table to 11 points.
On the stroke of halftime, Fermin Lopez calmly slotted home to give his team the lead after latching onto a perfectly weighted pass from Pedri.
Despite the absence of injured teenager Lamine Yamal, Barcelona managed to dominate long stretches of the match before being put to the test late on by a resolute Getafe team vying for European qualification.
Just after the hour mark, Rashford was introduced and had the pivotal effect. The England international rushed forward from inside his own half after latching onto a long ball from Robert Lewandowski. He maintained his composure to beat goalkeeper David Soria and complete the victory.
Rashford’s increasing significance to Hansi Flick’s team during the title run-in was highlighted by his seventh league goal since joining on loan from Manchester United.
With the Catalan team getting closer to a 29th league title, the outcome puts Barcelona firmly in control of the title race and gives their opponents little time to close the gap.
