Rita Edochie Criticizes Nigeria’s Politics Over Lack Of Vision

Rita Edochie, a Nollywood actress, has voiced her worries about what she sees as Nigerian politics’ deteriorating standards.

She bemoaned the increasing dilution of the political sphere, pointing out that practically anyone can now aspire to political office, even if they lack specific qualifications, competence, or significant ideas to contribute.

She claims that political engagement in Nigeria used to be more structured, with candidates being carefully evaluated and expected to fulfill predetermined requirements. She compared that to the current state of affairs, where, in her opinion, these standards seem to have considerably declined.

In her words;

Politics has been badly degraded; anything and everything can now come out to contest, even with nothing to offer, Alu Mee!

You no get integrity and captivity, so hide your face biko.

When Nigeria was Nigeria, every contestant had to have a concrete evaluation and must be equal to the task before coming out to contest for any small political office. I am not talking about a governorship, just a small local government position. You must be thoroughly evaluated and eligible.

But today, almost anyone can run for office, regardless of competence, vision, or what they have to offer the people.

Public office is now treated as an open stage for anyone and everyone, including those with neither the capacity nor the character, nor the genuine solutions needed, to serve the people.

I don’t know when politics became a dumping ground for people who swim in the pool of illusions.

Everybody wants to make him face show and make him shoe shine.

I’ve just been seeing things, and I can only laugh. Though we are still waiting for the freedom of the people in captivity, and I say it is well, since a saying has it that we should give thanks no matter the situation. If you believe it in respect to the situation of Nigeria today”.

Nigeria’s politics today is truly something else. Many individuals enter the political arena without a clear mission or vision of what they want to achieve. They lack a well-defined agenda, and their motives often seem driven by personal gain rather than genuine service to the people.

This absence of direction and purpose has hindered the country’s progress and left citizens yearning for leadership that is committed, focused, and truly dedicated to positive change.
