A baby girl in Sweden experienced a condition known as virilisation—where female infants develop male characteristics—after spending time lying on her father’s bare chest shortly after birth.
Unbeknownst to her parents, the father had been prescribed testosterone gel to address hypogonadism, a condition that results in low testosterone production. This potent gel is typically applied to areas like the chest, shoulders, and arms—places that are often exposed during those precious skin-to-skin moments.
It wasn’t long before her mother noticed some unusual changes. Her daughter’s clitoris began to enlarge, and her labia started fusing, leading to a distinctly masculinized appearance. Alarmed by these developments, the concerned parents took their 10-month-old to the doctor, where blood tests confirmed high levels of testosterone in her system.
Professor Jovanna Dahlgren, a pediatric endocrinologist at Sahlgrenska University Hospital in Gothenburg, noted that this was not an isolated incident; she has encountered at least six similar cases. “I don’t think people always understand how potent these treatments are,” she remarked in an interview with Göteborgs-Posten.
Dahlgren also recalled another troubling case involving a 10-year-old boy who developed breast tissue from exposure to his mother’s estrogen cream. These rare but significant incidents underscore a crucial issue: the unintended transference of topical hormone medications to infants through routine physical contact.
Fortunately, in this particular case, the symptoms of the little girl began to reverse once her father stopped using the gel and exposure was eliminated. It’s a stark reminder of the hidden dangers that can lurk within seemingly harmless everyday interactions.
