In Iraqi Kurdistan, a TikTok star was allegedly killed in an honor killing by her brother.
Eman Sami Maghdid, also known as Mari or Maria by her 47,000 followers, is claimed to have broken religious Islamic norms by wearing crop tops and a crucifix.
For this reason, her brother was said to have shot her to death, in the belief of defending his religion.
On Sunday night, her 17-year-old brother, whose identity is being hidden from the public, allegedly shot eight or nine bullets at the influencer on a road in Erbil.
The teenager, as well as another individual suspected of hiding him, was apprehended by police.
Eman, who was 20, was renowned for posting ‘rebellious’ photos and videos on social media, such as photos of her smoking cigarettes, expressing her beliefs, and wearing crop tops and a crucifix.
She is thought to have worn the piece as a fashion statement rather than converting from Islam to Christianity.
“I believe that humans will always suffer at the hands of other humans,” she posted on Facebook in August of last year.
At least eleven additional women have been killed this year in Iraq’s Kurdistan area, including Doski Azad, a 23-year-old transgender woman who was also shot dead, reportedly by her brother.
