Sokoto Boat Accident: Several Feared Dead, Rescue Efforts Ongoing

Sokoto State has been thrown into mourning following a tragic boat accident that claimed several lives at Kojiyo Ward in Goronyo Local Government Area on Sunday.

Eyewitnesses reported that the boat, which was ferrying passengers across the river, capsized suddenly, plunging everyone on board into the water. While some were rescued, many others are feared dead as search and recovery efforts continue.

Local authorities have yet to release the official casualty figure, but community members say the death toll may be high. Survivors have been rushed to nearby hospitals, while emergency teams and volunteers are still combing the river in search of missing passengers.

The Sokoto State Government has expressed deep sadness over the incident and extended condolences to the affected families. Officials also called on boat operators to strictly observe safety guidelines, particularly during the rainy season when water levels rise and accidents become more frequent.

Boat accidents remain a recurring tragedy in Northern Nigeria, where waterways are vital transport routes. Experts have repeatedly attributed such mishaps to overloading, poor maintenance, and a lack of life jackets, urging stronger enforcement of maritime safety regulations.

As Sokoto mourns, Nigerians are again reminded of the urgent need for improved waterway safety measures to prevent further avoidable losses.
