Succession, The Last of Us dominate nominations for 2023 Emmy Awards

The nominations for the highly anticipated 2023 Primetime Emmy Awards have been unveiled, revealing a fierce competition between the hit series Succession and The Last of Us. The Television Academy, responsible for honouring excellence in television, announced the nominees through an exclusive live stream on Wednesday, setting the stage for the awards ceremony scheduled for 18 September.

Succession, the acclaimed HBO series, exceeded expectations with its final season and emerged as the frontrunner with an astounding 14 acting nominations. The show is also vying for the prestigious Outstanding Drama Series award, a title it has previously claimed twice.

This year, the Outstanding Actor in a Drama Series category is particularly noteworthy, as Brian Cox, Kieran Culkin, and Jeremy Strong, all from Succession, will be competing against each other. This marks a historic moment with the highest number of actors nominated from the same show in this category.

Additionally, the Outstanding Supporting Actor category promises an intense showdown within the Succession cast. Reigning champion Matthew Macfadyen is joined by his talented co-stars Nicholas Braun, Alan Ruck, and Alexander Skarsgård as they vie for the coveted award. Sarah Snook, another member of the Succession ensemble, has been nominated for Outstanding Actress in a Drama Series, while J Smith-Cameron secured a nomination in the supporting actress category.

Succession’s domination extends beyond the acting realm, as the series collected an impressive total of 27 nominations, including technical categories. Not far behind, other HBO productions The Last of Us and The White Lotus amassed 23 and 24 nominations respectively, ensuring a tight race among these acclaimed shows.

On the comedy front, Ted Lasso emerges as the most-nominated series, garnering a remarkable 20 nods. The show has captivated audiences with its heartwarming storylines and exceptional performances, making it a strong contender in the comedy categories.
