Tenant Docked Over Alleged Threat To Kill His Landlady

Chukwuemeka Igwe, 27, was docked before an Akure Magistrate Court on Thursday, December 14, 2023, for reportedly threatening to kill his landlady and her children over housing rent.

Igwe was charged with a threat to kill and a violation of the peace.

Inspector Taiwo Oniyere, the Prosecution Counsel, told the court that the defendant committed the offence on December 6, 2023, at about 10:pm, at his abode, Ala-Elefosan via Akure in the Akure Magisterial District.

He claimed that the defendant threatened to kill his landlady, Deborah Sunday, after a disagreement over home rent in the property by chasing her and her children out of her house with a cutlass.

Oniyere further claimed that the defendant acted in a way that was likely to disrupt the peace by his callous act.

He claimed that the offence violated Sections 86 and 249(d) of the Ondo State Criminal Code Law of 2006.

The prosecutor requested a continuance so that he could gather witnesses and review the case file.

G. Benard, the defence counsel, asked the court to give his client bail in the most generous terms possible.

The prosecutor did not object to the defendant being released on bail. However, he requested the court to bind him in order to maintain peace and tranquillity.

Magistrate Olusola Olujobi granted the defendant bail in the amount of N200,000 with two sureties in the same amount.

Olujobi warned the defendant to behave properly and keep the peace until the issue was resolved.

She postponed the matter until January 28, 2024, for further consideration.
