The Importance of Having Something to Look Forward To

Ask someone who is going through a genuinely difficult season what is keeping them going and the answer, more often than not, involves something they are looking forward to. A trip planned for next month. A reunion with someone they have not seen in a while. An event they have been anticipating. Even something as small as a meal they have been planning or a film they intend to watch on the weekend. The specific thing matters less than the function it serves: it provides a point of light in the distance that makes the present feel more navigable.

The importance of having something to look forward to is not a trivial observation about positive thinking. It is a well-supported psychological reality about how anticipation functions as a resource that sustains wellbeing through difficulty, monotony, and the ordinary stretches of life that require no particular coping but benefit enormously from the presence of something worth moving toward.

Why Anticipation Is a Psychological Resource
The importance of having something to look forward to is rooted in the way anticipation activates the brain’s reward system. The pleasure of anticipating a positive event begins well in advance of the event itself, which means the psychological benefit extends across the entire period leading up to it rather than being confined to the event alone. Research consistently shows that anticipation of a positive experience contributes more to overall wellbeing than the experience itself, which is a compelling argument for the importance of having something to look forward to built deliberately into your life rather than left to chance.

Why Having Something to Look Forward to Matters
1.It provides motivation during difficult or monotonous periods. The importance of having something to look forward to is most visible during stretches of difficulty or routine where each day resembles the last and the energy to keep going requires a reason beyond the immediate. A point on the horizon, however modest, changes the psychological experience of the present by giving it a direction and a destination.
2.It activates the pleasure of anticipation independently of the event. Having something to look forward to produces genuine wellbeing in the present moment through the mechanism of anticipation. The planning, the imagining, and the counting down are not just preliminaries to the real thing. They are a meaningful part of the experience themselves, which multiplies the value of any single future event significantly.
3.It counters the flattening effect of routine. When every day is identical and the future holds nothing distinct, life develops a sameness that gradually erodes energy, curiosity, and the sense that things are moving. The importance of having something to look forward to as a counter to that flattening is significant: it reintroduces differentiation into the timeline and makes the future feel worth reaching.
4.It does not have to be large to be effective. One of the most practically important aspects of the importance of having something to look forward to is that the scale of the anticipated event is far less significant than its presence. A small, near-term pleasure planned deliberately can produce the same anticipatory wellbeing as a major event, which means the resource is available at every income level, in every season, and under almost any circumstance.
5.It creates a reason to take care of yourself in the present. Having something to look forward to subtly motivates present-moment self-care in a way that abstract future-focused reasoning often cannot. When there is something specific ahead worth being well for, the motivation to sleep properly, eat well, and manage stress has a concrete anchor that makes it more effective.

How to Build Anticipation Into Your Life Deliberately
Do not wait for something to look forward to to appear organically. Build it into your schedule intentionally and regularly. Plan something small for every week, something moderate for every month, and something meaningful for every quarter. The scale is less important than the consistency of always having something on the horizon that is genuinely worth moving toward.

The importance of having something to look forward to is not about escapism or deferring happiness to future events. It is about using anticipation as a genuine present-moment resource that sustains wellbeing through the ordinary and difficult stretches of life. Build it in deliberately and let it work.
