The Most Influential Person On AIG This Week Is Patrick Soon-Shiong

Patrick Soon-Shiong, is a South African-American transplant surgeon, millionaire, businessman, bioscientist, and media mogul. He is the innovator of the medication; Abraxane, famous for its effectiveness against pancreatic, breast, and lung cancer.

He was born on July 29, 1952, in South Africa, at Port Elizabeth Union, South Africa, to Chinese immigrants who left Chinese during World War ll.

He received a Bachelor’s degree in medicine (MBBCh) from the University of Witwatersrand, at age 23. He did his internship at the Johannesburg General Hospital. In 1979, with research awards from the American College of Surgeons, the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, and the American Association of Academic Surgery, he proceeded to the University of British Columbia, where he earned his Master’s degree.

Soon- Shion later moved to the United States of America for his
surgical training at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), and became a board-certified surgeon in 1984. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons (Canada) and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons.

Soon-Shiong is an adjunct professor of surgery at the University of California, Los Angeles. He is also the executive director of the Wireless Health Institute, and the founder of NantWorks, a network of startups in the fields of healthcare, biotechnology, and artificial intelligence.

He is also a visiting professor at Imperial College London and Dartmouth College. In addition to having more than 230 issued patents worldwide, Soon-Shiong has published more than 100 scientific articles on innovations in a variety of technology and medical disciplines.

Soon- Shiong was also the owner of the Los Angeles Times, the San Diego Tribune, which he later sold to MediaNews Group, and the minority owner of the Los Angeles Lakers.

Soon-Shiong is married to former actress Michele B. Chan, and they both have two children together.
