GROW WITH GRACE

No one can be the herald of the Messiah if not chosen by God. No one can be a voice for the Word Incarnate if not given divine appropriation by God Himself. No one can point out the Lamb of God if not appointed by the God of the mission Himself. Within the Catholic sacred tradition, we celebrate the birthdays of only 3 persons namely: Jesus (Dec 25); Mary, His mother (Sept 8); and John the Baptist (June 24). These are 3 key persons in the history of salvation.

Our readings speak about John the Baptist’s unique role of being called from before his birth to do the will of God. It was God who named him and gave him his mission before birth. He was a voice that brought healing and joy to his father and mother. He was a gracious child and a blessing for the house of Israel. He was chosen to be the last awaited prophet of the Lord who will prepare the way for the Lord.

The mission of John the Baptist was planned by God even before he was born. When we think deeper about his infancy narrative and his entire life, our existence too is in God’s hand even before we were born. God has a plan and mission for each of us just as He had a plan and a mission for John the Baptist.

John the Baptist went on to fulfill His mission in life and prepared the way for the Saviour. How do you see your role as a bearer of the Good News of Jesus? What thoughts and motivations do you have when you realize that you have been called by God from before your birth? What can you do to remind others of the ‘goodness’ and “graciousness of God”?

In today’s world, we are Christ’s ambassadors; His living letters and our responsibilities is expected to be carried out with great humility and courage. This can be done when we keep the commandments of God. When we speak the truth and live out Christ’s love.

May we live out Christ’s mission with much love, courage and humility. May we continue to remain steadfast in our obedience and dedication to God’s commands.Amen.
