Third Mainland Bridge Tragedy: Police Officer Killed as Speeding Lexus Hits Motorcycle on Restricted Route

A police officer died on the spot on Sunday after a speeding Lexus car rammed into his motorcycle on the motorcycle-restricted section of the Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos. The crash also left two other people hospitalized in a separate incident on the Lagos-Badagry Expressway the same day.

According to the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, the fatal collision occurred when the Lexus, with plate number EPE 765 JN, struck a Bajaj motorcycle ridden by the officer. LASTMA spokesperson Adebayo Taofiq said the driver immediately reported himself at the Adekunle Police Division after the accident.

LASTMA officials and police officers quickly mobilized to the scene to prevent another crash and to clear the wreckage. Taofiq said coordinated evacuation and recovery operations were carried out to restore traffic flow on the bridge corridor.

LASTMA General Manager Olalekan Bakare-Oki used the incident to warn motorists against speeding and reckless driving. He urged road users to respect traffic laws and remember the value of human life, noting that many of the crashes on Lagos roads could be avoided with more caution.

In the second crash, a driver and his female passenger were seriously injured after their Lexus Jeep plunged into a bush canal along the Lagos-Badagry Expressway. Taofiq said the driver was distracted by his phone and was overspeeding when he lost control, causing the vehicle to somersault into the canal. The driver suffered internal bleeding while the woman sustained a broken left arm.

Rescue teams from LASTMA and the Federal Road Safety Corps pulled the victims from the wreckage and rushed them to a nearby hospital. Bakare-Oki again stressed the danger of using mobile phones while driving, calling on motorists to stay focused and obey speed limits to prevent further loss of lives on Lagos roads.
