Four individuals were apprehended in the act of engaging in s£xual activity in public at night in Southlea Park, Harare, Zimbabwe, resulting in their arrest and subsequent fines for disorderly conduct.

The group consisted of three women, Mellisa Mapanga (23), Rutendo Joseph (27), and Elsie Mupesa (22), who identified themselves as sex workers, along with their client, Takura Pedzisai (35).

According to H-Metro, the arrests took place on June 9 around 9 PM after Constable Precious Manyimbiri of ZRP Southlea Park received a tip-off. She was accompanied by Sergeant Dohwe and Constables Mutume and Shoko. Upon arrival, they discovered the individuals engaging in lula lula and promptly took them into custody. A formal police report was subsequently filed.

At the Mbare Magistrate’s Court, the four admitted guilt to charges of disorderly conduct. The women explained that they were engaged in sex work as their only means of livelihood.

Magistrate Tatenda Mukurunga imposed a fine of US$50 on each woman, with an alternative of 45 days in prison if the fine was not paid. Pedzisai faced a heavier fine of US$100, with the court citing aggravating circumstances, including his marital status and the fact that his wife is pregnant.

Magistrate Mukurunga stressed the significance of maintaining public decency and cautioned that such offenses in public areas would face strict prosecution moving forward.
