Tinubu Pledges FG Support For Next Population Census

The Federal Government will assist the National Population Commission (NPC) in conducting the upcoming census, according to President Bola Tinubu.

Tinubu delivered the comments at the National Geospatial Data Repository and Digital Civil Registration and Vital Statistics System launches on Wednesday, November 8, at the State House in Abuja.

He, however, did not give the date for the next census.

“Our population remains the greatest asset of the nation in the development process,” the President said.

“Collecting accurate and reliable information on the size, distribution, composition, and characteristics of the population is an essential governance activity that is also consistent with the Renewed Hope Agenda of the present administration.

“The Commission will therefore be supported in the conduct of the next census.”

According to the president, Nigeria’s population continues to be its most valuable resource as it pursues its larger goal of becoming one of the world’s largest economies.

“Coming at a time when the Commission has made substantial progress in its quest to deliver the first digital population and housing census, it is my hope that the result of the census will provide the nation with much-needed data for development planning and the enthronement of good governance,” he said.

The House of Representatives last week rejected to hold the census this year because of the unrest, but they did decide to look into the funds used by the NPC to postpone the 2023 census.

Nigeria’s most recent national census was carried out in 2006.
