Trump And Zelensky Discuss Peace Plans In St. Peter’s Basilica

Pope Francis has consistently volunteered to mediate in order to assist bring about peace since the start of Russia’s war in Ukraine.

At practically every public appearance, he called for a stop to the war, and his prayers for “martyred Ukraine” became a common chant.

Above all, the late Pope’s appeals were for communication—for both parties to unite and figure out how to resolve the dispute.

US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky spoke at St. Peter’s Basilica on Saturday, shortly before Pope Francis’ funeral Mass.

President Zelensky and President Trump are seen sitting face-to-face in St. Peter’s Basilica engaged in conversation, according to photos.

A spokesperson for the White House called the discussion “very productive”. President Zelensky, meanwhile, said that it had been a “good meeting,” adding that the pair had “discussed a lot one on one.”

“Hoping for results on everything we covered,” President Zelensky wrote on social media. “Protecting the lives of our people. Full and unconditional ceasefire. Reliable and lasting peace that will prevent another war from breaking out.”
