United States President Donald Trump has revealed that officials within his administration have yet to exclude the possibility of deporting the relatives of the Afghan refugee who stands accused of fatally shooting one member of the National Guard while injuring another in the nation’s capital, Washington, DC.
“Well, we’re looking at that right now,” the president informed members of the press on Thursday when queried regarding his intentions to remove the spouse and offspring of the 29-year-old individual suspected of terrorism, Rahmanullah Lakanwal.
“We’re looking at the whole situation with family. It’s a tragic situation.”
The president shared this disclosure subsequent to his public statement confirming that the 20-year-old soldier from the West Virginia National Guard, Sarah Beckstrom, had succumbed to injuries sustained in the despicable ambush.
Lakanwal had entered the United States in 2021 amid the tumultuous withdrawal of American forces from Afghanistan. Over time, he established residence in Bellingham, Washington, alongside his wife and a minimum of five children.
Lakanwal, having previously engaged in combat operations within Afghanistan and gained entry to the US via the Operation Allies Welcome initiative implemented during the Biden administration, is alleged to have discharged a firearm and inflicted wounds upon two National Guard personnel mere blocks from the White House at approximately 2:15 p.m. on Wednesday.
Beckstrom, who sustained gunshot injuries to her head and chest, had been conducting patrol duties in the vicinity together with guardsman Andrew Wolfe, aged 24, at the moment the savage assault commenced.
A fellow guardsman promptly arrived at the location and neutralized Lakanwal, who himself suffered gunshot injuries amid the ensuing confrontation.
Following transport to a medical facility, Lakanwal now confronts a minimum of three charges encompassing assault with the intent to commit murder and unlawful possession of a firearm. Such charges could result in incarceration for as long as 15 years.
The United States Attorney for the District of Columbia, Jeanine Pirro, had earlier indicated intentions to seek charges of first-degree murder against the terrorism suspect should either of the two affected soldiers perish from their injuries.
Beckstrom was expeditiously conveyed to undergo emergency surgical intervention in the aftermath of the ambush and was reported to be in critical condition, though her medical outlook remained exceedingly poor until her eventual passing late Thursday evening.
“She’s just passed away,” Trump proclaimed during a Thanksgiving evening telephone conversation with representatives from approximately half a dozen military units to commemorate the federal holiday.
“She’s no longer with us. She’s looking down at us right now,” a visibly subdued Trump remarked, describing Beckstrom as an “incredible person, outstanding in every single way.”
Attorney General Pam Bondi has declared that federal prosecutors intend to advocate for the imposition of the death penalty upon Lakanwal.
