Two Arrested For Computer-related Fraud, Identity Theft, Cryptocurrency Fraud And Obtaining Money Under False Pretense

Two suspects have been detained by the Nigeria Police Force National Cybercrime Centre (NPF-NCCC) on suspicion of computer-related fraud, identity theft, cryptocurrency fraud, and acquiring money under false pretence.

According to a statement issued by CSP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the pair operate a syndicate that specializes in defrauding unsuspecting victims from foreign countries by adopting alluring aliases of other people and promising them romantic relationships, under the pretext of which they defraud their victims.

Adejobi claimed that in the case situation, information about their activities was obtained from the Incheon Metropolitan Police Agency in Korea via the Interpol National Central Bureau.

The report stated that in May 2021, the suspects approached the victim, a Korean national named Baek Seong-hee, via Kakaotalk, a popular mobile messaging app in South Korea, under the pretence of being a member of the US Armed Forces stationed in Yemen.

The suspect stole from the victim 259,637,941 Korean Won (KRW), which is equal to nearly 91 million Nigerian Naira, under the guise of a romantic relationship.

Adejobi said. Subsequent investigations led the NPF-NCCC to the arrest of the duo of Odia Theophilus aged 24 and Ebo Junior Success aged 25 at their hideout in Benin City, Edo State. The suspects confessed to being part of a syndicate responsible for these crimes and stated their roles as accomplices who provide bank accounts for fraudsters in furtherance of their nefarious activities.”

The police spokesperson continued by saying that IGP Usman Alkali Baba had praised DCP Uche Ifeanyi Henry, Head of the NPF-NCCC, for his efforts in ensuring a crackdown on offences relating to cybercrime.

In a similar vein, the IGP praised the cooperation with various law enforcement organizations throughout the world which was possible through the Interpol NCB platform, highlighting the significance of this cooperation in combating transnational crimes.
