Two Ghanaians Arrested With N250m Worth Of Hemp In Lagos

Two Ghanaians, Emmanuel Doedcher, 40, and Godswill Olamide John, 25, have been taken into custody with plants believed to be Indian hemp valued at approximately N250 million.

Navy officers from NNS BEECROFT apprehended the accused on December 9, 2023, at the Lagos anchorage.

When Commodore Kolawole Oguntuga, the Commander of NNS BEECROFT, announced the suspects’ detention to reporters, he revealed that the group was part of a conspiracy that specialised in shipping Ghanaian cannabis, popularly known as Skunk, from Accra, Ghana, to Nigeria. Under the cover of darkness, four further gang members dove into the Lagos lagoon and swam off.

The Nigerian Navy Ship NNS BEECROFT’s officers are now searching the waterways for the culprits.

“Recall that some weeks ago, we intercepted two consignments of cannabis weighing over 8000kg. The latest seizure weighs about 5000kg. We will continue to go after them. This is in line with the zero tolerance of the Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla, on smuggling. We will also continue to collaborate with sister agencies to ensure a crime-free yuletide season,” Oguntuga said.

Interrogated, Doedcher claimed his Ghanaian contact had informed him that the package was near Eleko Beach, in the Ajah neighbourhood of Lekki, and belonged to a Buchi. Godswill, for his part, said that once the shipment was properly delivered to its owners at Eleko Beach, he was promised N150,000.
