U.S. Recovers $225 Million Stolen In Crypto Scam

The U.S. government has retrieved $225 million in what represents the largest recovery of funds tied to a cryptocurrency investment fraud to date.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, June 18, the U.S. Attorney’s Office announced that the recovery stemmed from a thorough investigation conducted by the FBI and the U.S. Secret Service, employing blockchain analysis and other forensic methods. The statement did not specify whether any arrests had occurred.

According to officials, the misappropriated funds came from deceptive cryptocurrency investment schemes that misled victims into thinking they were engaging in legitimate investment opportunities. Over 400 individuals worldwide, including dozens in the United States, were reportedly impacted.

The scheme involved a complex money laundering network that executed hundreds of thousands of blockchain transactions to conceal the origin and ownership of the stolen assets.

“These scams prey on trust, often resulting in extreme financial hardship for the victims,” said Shawn Bradstreet, Special Agent in Charge at the U.S. Secret Service office in San Francisco.

Bradstreet further noted that U.S. authorities aim to eventually return the recovered funds to their rightful owners.

Cryptocurrency investment fraud resulted in over $5.8 billion in reported losses in 2024 alone, according to the statement.

A Gentle Reminder: Every obstacle is a stepping stone, every morning; a chance to go again, and those little steps take you closer to your dream.
