UEFA Removes Champions League Final From Russia, Appoints New Venue

Following Vladimir Putin’s government’s attack on Ukraine, UEFA has changed this season’s Champions League final from Saint Petersburg, Russia, to Paris, France.

On Friday, UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin presided over an emergency meeting of the Executive Committee, during which it was decided to shift the Champions League final away from Saint Petersburg.

According to the New York Times, the final will now be held in the Stade de France in Paris. The European Cup final was last held in Paris in 2006 when Barça defeated Arsenal 2-1.

The statement reads: “The UEFA executive committee decided to relocate the final of the 2021-22 UEFA Men’s Champions League from St Petersburg to Stade de France in St Denis.

“The game will be played as initially scheduled on Saturday, May 28 at 2100 CET.

“UEFA wishes to express its thanks and appreciation to French Republic president Emmanuel Macron for his personal support and commitment to have European club football’s most prestigious game moved to France at a time of unparalleled crisis.”

UEFA also announced that any games in its events scheduled to take place in Russia or Ukraine, whether involving clubs or national teams, will be rescheduled until further notice.

Today's Quote

“Here’s to the crazy ones. The misfits. The rebels. The troublemakers. The round pegs in the square holes. The ones who see things differently. They’re not fond of rules. And they have no respect for the status quo. You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them. About the only thing you can’t do is ignore them. Because they change things. They push the human race forward. And while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius. Because the people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world, are the ones who do.”
