In response to a plea for them to lose their royal titles, Britain’s Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have been called irrelevant by a UK government minister.
Harry has come under fire for criticizing significant British institutions in the couple’s frank Netflix documentary on their move to the US to live with his wife Meghan.
Meghan said the media sought to “destroy” her in it, while Harry accused the British royal family of having a “great level of unconscious bias.”
Since Harry left his position as a senior working royal more than two years ago, Conservative MP Bob Seely claimed that there is a “political issue” with Harry’s remarks.
The couple’s royal titles could eventually be revoked, according to Mr. Seely, who intends to introduce suggested legislation. The Isle of Wight MP said he might introduce a brief private members’ bill in the next year that, if enacted, would allow MPs to vote on a resolution giving the Privy Council the authority to reduce the couple’s royal status.
As he told the PA news agency, “There is a political issue,” he claimed to have been considering the law even before the Netflix documentary surfaced.
In addition to demeaning his family and exploiting his suffering for the benefit of the general populace, Mr. Seely continued, “He is also targeting some crucial institutions in our nation.”
After leaving their positions as senior working royals, Harry and Meghan inked lucrative deals, estimated to be worth more than £100 million, with Netflix and Spotify, with the docuseries being the first significant production.
Mr. Seely questioned Harry’s decision to maintain his dukedom despite “ruining the monarchical institution and his family.”
The couple is “utterly irrelevant” to the advancement of the UK and the royal family, according to Guy Opperman, the UK’s minister of labour.
He told BBC’s Question Time: “I think they are a very troubled couple, which I think anybody looking at them can say is a sad state of affairs.
“That having been said, I agree that they are utterly irrelevant to this country and the progress of this country and the royal family that we all, I believe, support.”
He added: “I don’t think it has a fundamental impact on the royal family. I certainly won’t be watching it. I would urge everyone to boycott Netflix and make sure that we focus on the things that matter.”
He did state that it was “wrong” how much of the couple’s life was “picked over” by the media when they were residing in the UK.
“I do think there is a valid debate about media intrusion into certain people’s private life,” Mr. Opperman said. The amount to which their lives are being combed over is something that, while they were living here, was unacceptable, but that discussion is still going on.
In the documentary, Harry claimed that while members of his family had questioned Meghan’s need for more media protection than their wives had received, they had failed to understand the “race element.” The fourth, fifth, and sixth episodes of the documentary are scheduled to be released next Thursday.
As the pieces appeared, the pair said they were “playing whack-a-mole,” with Meghan alleging that “salacious rumors” had been “placed” in the British press before their wedding. Harry also discussed the Windsors’ alleged “unconscious bigotry.”
The third documentary episode referred to a 2017 event where Princess Michael of Kent wore a blackamoor-inspired brooch that was condemned as racist.
Harry said: “In this family, sometimes you are part of the problem rather than part of the solution. There is a huge level of unconscious bias.
“The thing with unconscious bias is it is no one’s fault. But once it has been pointed out, or identified within yourself, you then need to make it right. It is education. It is awareness. It is a constant work in progress for everybody, including me.”
Meghan talked about her first encounter with Prince William and Kate and how she was taken aback by the “formality” of the royal family when they were all together behind closed doors.
“Imagination is more important than knowledge. For knowledge is limited, whereas imagination embraces the entire world, stimulating progress, giving birth to evolution.”
