UK Universities Suffering Over Reduction In Nigerian Students

A major lobby group for UK universities has warned that the administration of Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s hostile attitude has caused a substantial reduction in the number of overseas students entering the country, putting many of them at risk of financial deficits.

Because of immigration laws that discourage foreign students from coming to study in Britain, Vivienne Stern, the chief executive of Universities UK, which represents over 140 universities, warned that the sector would see a “serious overcorrection.”

“If they want to cool things down, that’s one thing, but it seems to me that through a combination of rhetoric, which is off-putting, and policy changes . . .[they have] really turned a whole bunch of people off that would otherwise have come to the UK,” Stern told the Financial Times.

Stern’s plea for policy change and rhetoric reversal comes as it emerged that some top universities including York, which is a member of the elite Russell Group, were being forced to soften their entry requirements in order to maintain numbers of overseas students.

“The government needs to be very careful: we could end up with, from a policy point of view, what I would consider a serious overcorrection,” she added.

UK universities have become more dependent on non-EU students to make ends meet as a result of the £9,250 domestic tuition fee being effectively stagnant for the past ten years. In fact, non-EU student fees currently make up roughly 20% of sector revenue.

Universities privately warn that enrollment from important nations like Nigeria and India has declined recently and that numbers have dropped significantly this year as a result of a series of unfavourable policy actions by the government.

The Financial Times was informed by a senior university insider that the industry had been “spooked” by data indicating that the number of foreign students enrolling in January 2024 was “way below the bottom end of projections for everyone.”

A Gentle Reminder: Every obstacle is a stepping stone, every morning; a chance to go again, and those little steps take you closer to your dream.

“A lot of companies have chosen to downsize, and maybe that was the right thing for them. We chose a different path. Our belief was that if we kept putting great products in front of customers, they would continue to open their wallets.”
