UNICAL Lecturer Suspended Over Misconduct

The University of Calabar (UNICAL) has suspended another lecturer, Dr Joseph Idung, from the Department of Science Laboratory Technology, as part of the institution’s ongoing suspensions.

According to Tribune, a suspension letter from Registrar Gabriel Egbe says that Dr. Idung failed to repay fees collected from students for their entrance into the Nigerian Institute of Science Laboratory Technology (NISLT).

This decision was made just a few days after the Senate Examination Misconduct Committee (SEMC) revealed that Dr. Joseph Akpan, the Acting Head of the Department of Pharmacology, had altered exam scores in PHM 311 (Introduction to General Antimicrobial Pharmacology). As a result, he was suspended and eventually fired.

The administration was disappointed that Dr. Idung would not return the money that was purportedly extracted. In order to enable him to meet with the Anti-Corruption and Transparency Monitoring Unit (ACTU), which is in charge of looking into the matter, the letter claimed that Vice-Chancellor Professor Florence Obi had ordered his suspension from his duties at the institution.

He has also been ordered to handover all university property in his possession to the Head of the Department and to avoid campus unless he responds to the ACTU’s summons.

Furthermore, the letter asks the Bursar to pay Dr. Idung half of his salary throughout the suspension time.

A Gentle Reminder: Every obstacle is a stepping stone, every morning; a chance to go again, and those little steps take you closer to your dream.
