Vote-Buying Must Stop – Abdulsalami Tells Politicians

General Abdulsalami Abubakar (rtd), former Nigerian military leader and Chairman of the National Peace Committee (NPC), has urged politicians to end the practice of vote-buying ahead of the impending Ondo State governorship election on November 16.

Speaking at the Peace Accord signing event in Akure on Friday, Abdulsalami advised contestants to prioritise free and fair elections and accept the results if they are deemed legitimate.

In a forceful appeal, Abdulsalami urged candidates from all 17 participating political parties to avoid violence, intimidation, and vote-trading, emphasising Nigerian citizens’ right to elect leaders without incentive.

He stated that any issues raised after the election should be addressed through legitimate and peaceful ways.

Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, INEC Chairman, emphasised the importance of commitment to the peace pact, stating that peaceful elections necessitate active adherence to the agreement by candidates and parties. Yakubu urged religious and community leaders to assist maintain peace, noting that over seven peace treaties for off-cycle elections have been struck since 2020.

Inspector General of Police Kayode Egbetokun, represented by Deputy Inspector General Sylvester Alabi, declared that police personnel will be deployed to all 3,933 polling stations in Ondo State to ensure safety. He stated that five officers would be stationed at each polling unit to protect INEC workers, materials, and voters.
