Weekly Football News Catch-Up: July 17th: Fernandes Rejects Saudi; Maguire No More Captain; Osimhen Ready To Sign New Deal; Others

Bruno Fernandes Rejects Double Bids From Saudi Arabia

Bruno Fernandes, a star for Manchester United, reportedly turned down two overtures from Saudi Arabia a month ago.

This was revealed by Fabrizio Romano, a market transfer expert, on Monday in a post on his verified Twitter account.

Fernandes wants to remain at United, where he is anticipated to be named the following permanent captain, according to Romano.

He wrote: “Understand Bruno Fernandes rejected more than two approaches from Saudi one month ago.

“It’s only Manchester United for Bruno who’s expected to become the next permanent captain.”

Osimhen Is Eager To Sign New Contract – Agent

Roberto Calenda, the agent for Victor Osimhen, has refuted rumours that his client won’t renew his contract with Serie A champions Napoli.

Following his outstanding performances for Napoli last season, Osimhen is a man in high demand.

The 24-year-old helped Napoli end their 33-year drought for a league championship by scoring 26 goals in 32 games.

In light of interest from some of the top teams in Europe, Napoli is eager to lock him down to a new contract.

Calenda took to Twitter on Monday to call out a report from Naples-based newspaper Il Mattino, saying: “I read in Il Mattino that ‘Calenda has no intention of renewing in the summer and that he wants to explore all avenues in the market first’. Fake news.”

Osimhen’s contract with Napoli has two more years to run.

It will take a sizable offer for the Partenopei to change their minds as they are not eager to sell the Nigerian.

Erik Ten Hag Strips Maguire Of Manchester United Captaincy

Harry Maguire, a player for the England national team, announced that he will not be captaining Manchester United in the upcoming campaign.

The defender claimed that the decision was made following a Sunday conversation with manager Erik Ten Hag.

He claimed that the manager had told him that the captaincy would change.

While expressing his “personally extreme disappointment,” Maguire vowed to keep giving it his all each time he wore the shirt.

The 30-year-old England international said it has been an enormous honour to captain Manchester United ever since the day he assumed the position.

“It’s one of the greatest honours in club football. I’ve done everything I possibly could to help United be successful – on and off the field.

“I will always be grateful to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer for first giving me the responsibility and I wish whoever now takes it on every success and they will have my full support. Harry.”

Arsene Wenger Gives Verdict On Declan Rice

Arsene Wenger, a legendary Arsenal manager, has given his approval to the club’s £105 million acquisition of Declan Rice from West Ham.

Rice was the target of two unsuccessful offers from the Gunners, while Manchester City also made a £90 million offer for him.

The third bid from Arsenal for the England international was, however, accepted.

The 24-year-old joins Jurrien Timber and Kai Havertz as Mikel Arteta’s third summer additions.

Wenger, speaking to Eurosport about Rice, said: “I think it is a good investment. Overall, personally, I think they have made good buys as they are players who are now mature, 23, 24, but still young, so can stay together for a few years.”

Enyimba Offer NPL Top Scorer Obioma Mouthwatering Deal

According to DAILY POST, Chukwuemeka Obioma is planning to remain with Enyimba, the league champions of the Nigerian Premier League.

Following his achievements in the previous season, the NPL’s leading scorer has drawn interest from elite North African teams.

The adventurous forward would receive a tantalizing offer of a two-year contract with a salary of one million naira per month from the nine-time NPL champions.

Obioma scored 16 goals in the 2022–23 NPL season.

He was absent from the team at the most recent Naija Super 8 preseason competition in Lagos.
