Weekly Political Drama News Catch Up: January 16th: Nigerians Question BB Naija Starting Before Election; Brymo Apologies For Anti-Igbo Comments; Datti Baba-Ahmed Gets Emotional Over Insult On His Late Father

Brymo Apologises After Making Anti-Igbo Comments

Olawale Brymo, a Nigerian singer, has apologized for his tweets about the possibility of a president of Nigeria coming from the southeast.

His apology comes after a petition was started by thousands of Nigerians to prevent the artist from receiving the All Africa Music Award, where he was nominated in the category of “Songwriter of the Year.”

The musician drew criticism after previously saying that the Igbo people are not prepared to produce a Nigerian president.

He had also urged the region to run for vice president first before pursuing the presidency.

Speaking on the situation, Brymo provided more context for his tweet during a live video on his Instagram account on Friday evening.

He claimed that the controversy arose as a result of his comments regarding the writer Chimamanda Adichie’s decision to accept a chieftaincy title in her birthplace of Abba, Anambra State, rather than accept national honours.

He said, “It is very important you understand that this entire fracas began with me seeing in the media that Chimamanda Adichie refused some national honours and had picked up some traditional title in the East at home.

“And I suggested that for me, it says a lot about the Igbo presidency because that actual seat is what the region should be eyeing right now. I have clamoured for Igbo presidency in the last few years, you wouldn’t believe it.

“It will pop in your mind when you hear the news that Igbos do not actually want the presidency.

“I did not insult the tribe, I am sorry to anyone who it sounded as such to. I was trying to weigh into a very important matter.”

Nigerians Fume As BB Naija Starts Close To Election And Comedians Fix Comedy Shows On Election Day

Nigerians expressed disappointment after popular show, Big Brother Naija starts few weeks to election and comedians set show dates on clection Day.

This is as most people perceive this to be a ploy by the government to distract Nigerians ahead of the general elections.

Many Nigerians took to social media to voice their dissatisfactions and disgust with decision to have such program running at the moment, especially the Big Brother Naija has never been aired on January.

See some comments from aggrieved citizens…

@Daniel Regha: BBN organisers should cancel or, better still, postpone the show until after the 2023 Nigerian general election; Cos many people will get distracted. I get the organisers want to make money, but this isn’t the right time to air the BBTitans. Ebuka of all people should know that.

@Mr_Chuks: I ever see anything BBN on my TL
I will block you!
You must be a useless Person!
We have an Election that will decide the future of this nation and the next Generation and they brought that event to distract you and you are falling for it.
Focus osiso, Anu ofia!

@chudy_jnr: We’re angry that many celebrities set up their shows on election day plus the BBN show…
Meanwhile the first Prestigious University in Nigeria has scheduled its Matriculation ceremony on this same day as the election.
E be like say students no go vote abi???

@saintokis: My strong advice for BBN if they care to yield to it.
Prospone your show to after election.
If not, you will be shocked with the outcome.
Use your head.

Datti Baba-Ahmed Gets Emotional On Tv After Insults Were Thrown Directly At His Late Father

The Labour Party’s (LP) vice presidential candidate Datti Baba-Ahmed broke down during an appearance on television after receiving insults directed at his family.

Peter Obi, his principal, and Baba-Ahmed participated in a town hall meeting on Channels Television on Sunday, January 8th.

In a video, Baba-Ahmed can be seen breaking down over remarks made against his family.

According to Datti, before he entered the presidential run, no one had ever insulted his father, who passed away at least 35 years ago, “that is not fair,” he said.

“When people think they have money, they have power, and the sitting authority is theirs, there’s no limit. Someone has to tap them on the shoulder. I did it and I pointed a finger. You do it again – do one, I’ll do three. You know I’m capable of doing it.

“They’ve stopped. However, I and my family have been paying a huge price for my attempts to rescue Nigeria. They sent all sorts of people after me.

“Thirty-five years ago, at least, our dad of blessed memory passed away. No one ever insulted him until I joined the elections for the presidency. This is not fair. It doesn’t happen anywhere in the world.

“You don’t insult people’s parents or their families. It’s a huge price for anyone to pay,” the LP Vice-Presidential candidate said as he got emotional.

Former aviation minister Femi Fani-Kayode insulted the father of the LP vice presidential candidate in a tweet in December 2022.

He was referred to Datti Baba-Ahmed as “the son of a Mauritanian cow-lover and itinerant refugee.”

Fani-Kayode said, “I told you this creature doesn’t have a brain. Gaffe after gaffe, stupidity after stupidity! What else can you expect from the son of a Mauritanian cow-lover and itinerant refugee? The man is nothing more than a Mauritanian almajiri and chronic ignoramus.

“He should be rounded up, placed in chains, put in a cow pen and deported back to Mauritania where he came from.”
