A heart-wrenching story has emerged from Lagos, where a widow has lost her home, built with her late husband’s pension, to demolition by strangers claiming ownership of the land. The incident has left the widow and her family homeless, sparking outrage and calls for justice.
The widow, who wishes to remain anonymous, had built the house barely two years ago as a symbol of her late husband’s love and legacy. However, her world was turned upside down when demolition workers, accompanied by police officers, arrived at her doorstep, claiming the land had been sold to a new owner.
The widow alleges that she was not given prior notice or compensation, and her pleas fell on deaf ears. “I fainted when I saw my home being demolished,” she recounted, still in shock. “I thought it was a nightmare, but it’s my reality now”.
The incident highlights the growing concerns about land grabbing and forced evictions in Lagos, with many residents losing their homes and livelihoods to make way for new developments. The Lagos State Government has been criticized for its handling of such cases, with allegations of complicity and corruption.
The widow’s case is not isolated, as many others have faced similar struggles. In Oworonshoki, residents were given only five minutes to pack up and leave before their homes were demolished, leaving them homeless and without compensation.
The Housing Development Advocacy Network (HDAN) has called for accountability and transparency in the demolition process, emphasizing that government officials complicit in such actions must be held responsible. “Demolition is the punishment for the developer, but the criminal officers who aided the construction must also be brought to justice,” said Festus Adebayo, Executive Director of HDAN.
The widow’s story serves as a reminder of the need for stronger protections for property owners and residents, particularly vulnerable individuals like widows and the elderly. As the search for justice continues, many are left wondering: what’s next for the widow and her family?
