YouTuber Jake Paul Revealed He’s Been Experiencing Memory Loss Since Start Of Boxing Career

American social media personality and professional boxer; Jake Joseph Paul has recently revealed that he’s been experiencing memory loss and slurred speech since pivoting to a pay-per-view-funded boxing career.

The controversial YouTuber with over 20.4 million subscribers, during an interview by Graham Bensinger, said;

“I notice it in conversations with my girlfriend or friends — not remembering something that I should be able to remember that happened a couple of days ago,” Paul said during an interview on In Depth with Graham Bensinger. “Sometimes in my speech, every hundredth or two hundredth word I’ll mess up or slur, which I didn’t do before.”

As a teen playing football, Jake Paul said he experienced several concussions, which can include a wide array of symptoms ranging from headaches, nausea, and vomiting to slurred speech, memory loss, and a temporary loss of consciousness. Interviewer Besinger asked Paul how many concussions he’s had across the span of his 24-year-old life, which he considered for a moment before estimating a total between 20 and 30.

Given his background with brain injuries, Paul said he had his brain scanned before starting his boxing career in 2018.

“The doctor told me there’s a lack of blood flow from the concussions I had when I would play football into certain areas of my brain, one of them being the frontal lobe which is partially memory.”

According to Queensland Health, the frontal lobe of the brain is considered our center for behavior and emotional control.

Experiencing damage to the frontal lobe can not only distort personality and affect problem-solving capabilities, but also lead to loss of simple movements, language expression, ability to focus, and the ability to complete multi-stepped tasks such as making coffee.

“After my first year of boxing, I went back and it was worse,” the former Disney star said. “[Doctor’s] advice is: ‘Don’t do that sport.'”

Paul attributes the rapid progression in lack of blood flow to his challenging boxing opponents. “It was affecting me a lot more at a rapid pace because I never took it easy. I was always thrown in there with people who were way, way better than me until I started to slowly get to their level.”

One of Paul’s most notable fights was against former NBA player Nate Robinson, which the influencer won with a knockout. Next, he’s slated to go up against former UFC welterweight champion Tyron Woodley on Saturday night — a rematch of their Aug. 29 head-to-head, which Paul won by a split decision, ESPN reported.

To help with his symptoms, Paul said he has experimented with psychedelics and smoking toad venom — a drug Mike Tyson previously attributed to his inspiration for weight loss, restarting his boxing career, and reconnection with estranged family.
