Vindication for Prof. Humphrey Nwosu: A Tribute To A Democratic Icon

In a momentous decision, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has posthumously conferred the national honour of Commander of the Order of the Niger (CON) on the late Prof. Humphrey Nwosu, former Chairman of the National Electoral Commission (NEC).

This recognition is a testament to Nwosu’s unwavering commitment to democracy and his pivotal role in conducting the historic June 12, 1993, presidential election.

A Victory for Robust Legislative Engagement

Senator Austin Akobundu has hailed President Tinubu’s decision, describing it as a “victory for robust legislative engagements” and a nod to the late professor’s bravery and integrity. Akobundu’s passionate advocacy for Nwosu’s national honour was instrumental in pushing for this recognition, despite strong opposition from some senators.

A Legacy of Courage and Conviction

Prof. Nwosu’s legacy extends beyond his role in conducting the June 12 election. He demonstrated remarkable courage and conviction in the face of military oppression, refusing to back down from his commitment to democracy. As Senator Akobundu noted, “Humphrey Nwosu remains a great man in our hearts and should be given his rightful place in the hall of honour in this country.”

A Tribute to a Democratic Hero

The conferment of the CON honour on Prof. Nwosu is a fitting tribute to his contributions to Nigeria’s democratic journey. It serves as a reminder of the importance of integrity, courage, and conviction in public service. As we celebrate this long-overdue recognition, we honour the memory of a true democratic icon who paved the way for future generations.

A New Chapter in Nigeria’s Democratic Narrative

This development marks a significant milestone in Nigeria’s democratic narrative, highlighting the power of persistent advocacy and robust legislative engagement. As Senator Akobundu aptly put it, “Those who aligned themselves with the right side of history” have been vindicated. We look forward to a continued celebration of democratic values and the recognition of those who have contributed to our nation’s growth.
