PDP Asks INEC To Declare Seats Of Four Defectors Vacant

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has been urged by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Kaduna State Chapter to declare vacant the seats of three State House of Assembly members and one House of Representatives member who recently defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

The party said the lawmakers’ defection was an unconstitutional conduct that should not be allowed to continue and a violation of the public’s faith in them.

The PDP requested that the MPs immediately leave their positions and denounced the defections in a statement signed by Maria Dogo, the party’s publicity secretary.

The party invoked Sections 68(1)(g) and 109 of the Constitution, which require any serving legislator who defected to another party to resign their seat.

It further urged the Speakers of the House of Representatives and the Kaduna State House of Assembly to act immediately by declaring the seats vacant and informing INEC to hold bye-elections.

“While we acknowledge the constitutional rights of every Nigerian to freedom of association, we view these defections as unacceptable,” the statement read.Nigerian home decor ideas.

The PDP emphasized that there was no split among the national party leadership to support the defections, and it promised its supporters and the constituents of the impacted lawmakers that it will use constitutional measures to regain the mandates.

The party reaffirmed its belief in its power and support in spite of the recent events, claiming that the majority of Kaduna State citizens still favor it.
