A Concerned Busy Mom: Am I Being Selfish If I Take Care Of Myself? 3

Hello Great Mothers! Happy New Year!
As mothers, we often feel everyone in our homes deserves to be taken care of except ourselves. We often neglect ourselves, we ignore the call of our bodies for rest. We ensure every member of our family is adequately taken care of. We think we are being selfish when we set out time to take care of ourselves.

Setting out time to take care of yourself as a busy mother is not selfish. Rather, dismissing your personal needs regularly can be harmful to your general health. Neglecting the need to take some time off to relax, read a book, see a movie, exercise, etc leave you worn out, always stressed, and unhappy. So, schedule self-care time if you want to preserve your health and sanity. Furthermore, by taking care of yourself properly, you’ll not only be able to meet your own needs but also better position yourself to look after your family.

One of the ways to take care of yourself as a busy mom was discussed in my previous article. Others are;

1)Get good sleep
Most mothers have very irregular sleep patterns. Busy moms sleep very late and rise fairly early. Mothers who work outside the home are most guilty of this. While it is likely that you have this sleeping pattern as a busy mom, it could eventually harm your health.

It’s crucial to obtain enough good sleep if you want to stay healthy. The ideal sleep duration varies from person to person but is often between 7-9 hours every night. If you have young children, it may not always be possible for them to sleep for 7-9 hours at a time, but there are simple steps you can take to establish a consistent sleep pattern. The steps are;

a)Take a nap, when you can: It’s always a good idea to take your kids’ lead and go to bed when they do. Don”t be afraid to ask for assistance, when a responsible person offers to watch the kids, take them up on it so you can rest. You can make up for lost sleep at night by taking naps during the day. Even a brief nap of 20 minutes might increase your level of alertness and lessen daytime fatigue.

b)Establish a good sleeping habit; Good sleeping habits should be established for both you and your children. Get into the habit of going to bed at the same hour each night.

Other steps a concerned busy mom can adopt to establish a good sleep pattern shall be discussed in my next article.
