Adeniyi Kayode, the 46‑year‑old driver who was at the wheel of the Lexus SUV that crashed on the Lagos‑Ibadan Expressway on 29 December 2025, appeared at the Sagamu Magistrate Court on 20 January 2026. He was charged with four counts: dangerous driving causing death, reckless and negligent driving, driving without due care and attention, and operating a vehicle without a valid national driver’s licence.
The court granted Kayode bail set at ₦5 million with two sureties, but ordered him remanded pending fulfilment of the bail conditions. Rather than proceeding immediately, Magistrate Olufunilayo Somefun adjourned the case to 25 February 2026 to allow the prosecution to forward the case file to the Ogun State Attorney‑General for legal advice. Prosecutors requested the adjournment, while defence counsel opposed it, arguing they were ready to go to trial.
The crash, which claimed the lives of Joshua’s personal trainer Latif Ayodele, and strength‑and‑conditioning coach Sina Ghami, was attributed to excessive speed and wrongful overtaking, with some reports noting a possible tyre blow‑out. Joshua, who sustained only minor injuries, was later discharged from the hospital and has since paid his respects to the deceased at a Lagos funeral home before their bodies were repatriated to the UK.
Journalists and lawyers gathered at the court premises on 20 January, awaiting the next steps in a case that has drawn national attention to road‑safety enforcement and the legal process surrounding fatal traffic incidents.
