August 1: The NSCDC Warns That Armed Protesters Will Be Considered Criminals

The Plateau State-based Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has issued a warning, threatening to prosecute anyone found in possession of a firearm during the impending nationwide demonstration.

In a speech on Wednesday, NSCDC Commandant Alexander Barunde stressed the value of upholding order amid protests to officers and staff in Jos.

Although Barunde acknowledged that residents have the right to protest government policies, he asked organizers to make sure the rally stays peaceful and doesn’t give troublemakers a chance to spread disorder.

“I’m calling on the organisers of the planned protest not to create a restive situation or give room for mischief makers to unleash anarchy on the society.

“It must be violence-free and the protesters must eschew every negative tendency to create anarchy; there is room for dialogue with government over every concern.

“Any protester wielding weapon of any kind will be treated as a criminal element with different motive; such a person will be arrested and decisively dealt with in accordance with the law.

“Every law abiding and patriotic citizen of Plateau should have the interest of the state in dealing with the protest and the uncertainties associated with it
,” he said.

I will implore Nigerians to have a peaceful protest.

Today's Quote

“Here’s to the crazy ones. The misfits. The rebels. The troublemakers. The round pegs in the square holes. The ones who see things differently. They’re not fond of rules. And they have no respect for the status quo. You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them. About the only thing you can’t do is ignore them. Because they change things. They push the human race forward. And while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius. Because the people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world, are the ones who do.”
