Ayra Starr Reveals Why She prefers Ghanaian Jollof Rice

The celebrated singer Ayra Starr has shared her preference for Ghanaian jollof rice over its Nigerian counterpart.

On social media, there has been a long-running competition between Nigerian and Ghanaian users on who makes the best jollof rice.

The “Bad Vibes” hitmaker stated she likes Ghanaian jollof rice in a recent game of 21 questions on BET Amplified, citing the garnishing as the reason for her preference.

The 21-year-old musician also discussed the variations in the jollof rice customs between the two nations.

“I mean they are both really amazing. I grew up with Nigerian jollof rice. Nigerian jollof is practically called party rice, so people eat it at parties. It is like a celebratory food,” she said.

“The culture around it is that they usually use a big pot to cook it outside, so it kind of burns and it is smoky. So it is smoky jollof rice, that is what it is called. Ghanaian jollof rice has like things inside but for Nigerian jollof, the protein, vegetables are outside if you are having anything else. So it is two different vibes.”

Starr has emerged as one of the fastest-rising artists on the continent, having won multiple honors and recognitions.

She was one of the Nigerian musicians that received Grammy Award nominations this year. She received a nomination for her first-ever “Best African Music Performance”

Nigeria jollof rice is true happiness. Eating it literally gives me butterflies in my stomach.

“A lot of companies have chosen to downsize, and maybe that was the right thing for them. We chose a different path. Our belief was that if we kept putting great products in front of customers, they would continue to open their wallets.”
