Chelsea goalkeeper chooses to represent Morocco instead of Algeria

Morocco coach Vahid Halilhodzic announced, on Thursday, a list of 27 players in preparation for 3 matches this month in the African qualifiers for the World Cup “Qatar 2022”.

The list witnessed the presence of the name of the young Chelsea goalkeeper, Sami Al-Telmisani, aged 17, for the first time.

Tlemcen is descended from an Algerian father and a Moroccan mother. He also holds French citizenship. He was entitled to represent Algeria, or Morocco, and even France, which played for its small Sunni groups, but he chose to defend the colors of his mother’s home team, Morocco.

The Moroccan national team list knew the absence of Tlemcen’s Chelsea colleague, Hakim Ziyech, for disciplinary reasons, while Youssef Al-Nusairi, the Spanish player of Seville, was called, despite his injury.

The Moroccan team will play in the third and fourth rounds of the African qualifiers for the World Cup in Qatar, against Guinea Bissau on October 6 and 9, and then play the postponed match of the second round against Guinea on the 12th of the same month.
