Could This Be The Hour?

Acts 20:17-27
John 17:1-11

All of our human history changes at this moment-the hour Jesus speaks about in today’s gospel. It is the hour of glory through which Christ saved us. It is the hour of salvation through which Christ redeems us. He reveals the Father’s glory and He receives His glory from the Father. This is the greatest moment in the history of humanity. His suffering is part of it. His risurrection fulfills it, the few days He spent before ascends to the Father is an essential part of it.

In today’s gospel is the continuation of the discourse of Jesus with his apostles in the upper room-the Last Supper. Here, Jesus offers a prayer to the Father, recognizing that the moment has come for God’s plan to come to fruition:. Jesus then prays for the disciples, and at the end of our reading, we hear Jesus say: “And now I will no longer be in the world, but they are in the world, while I am coming to you. Holy Father, keep them in your name that you have given me, so that they may be one just as we are.”

Christ knew His Church will be built so He appears to them on several occasions and encourages them to pray and prepare for the outpouring of the Holy Spirit-The Spirit that makes members of one, one spirit in Christ. We are In between the time of the Ascension and the Pentecost, the in-between time is to be spent in the upper room observing his commandments and understanding the importance of one’s personal ministry and vocation.

In these in-between times, the prayer of unity and peace is very vital. I see the prayer pertaining to us, that we find our way to communion with each other, with all people, and with all of creation. I don’t think unity requires absolute uniformity. As a church, we do need to be unified in our mission to spread the Good News of Jesus Christ, and to share God’s love in Jesus, in the power of the Holy Spirit. But we do it in cultural expressions and in a language that is understandable to the people we serve. We may not be free of conflicts or disagreements about how the message is shared, but we cannot give in to hatred of any sort.

Come Holy Spirit, create in me a new heart and a new spirit. May you make us come together as one united and holy family. Amen

Today's Quote

“Here’s to the crazy ones. The misfits. The rebels. The troublemakers. The round pegs in the square holes. The ones who see things differently. They’re not fond of rules. And they have no respect for the status quo. You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them. About the only thing you can’t do is ignore them. Because they change things. They push the human race forward. And while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius. Because the people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world, are the ones who do.”
