In the Gospel narrative, Jesus demonstrates His authority over nature by awakening and calming the tempestuous sea, subsequently posing two penetrating questions to His disciples: “Why are you so afraid?” and “Do you still have no faith?” By this juncture in Mark’s Gospel, the Apostles have been witnesses to several miracles and have recently heard three parables concerning the Kingdom of God. These inquiries seem to stem from a sense of disappointment and confusion regarding the Apostles’ lack of understanding of His message. Their distraction during His teachings and miraculous acts raises a significant question—how could they remain inattentive to the lessons presented by Jesus?
The Apostles, predominantly composed of ordinary figures such as fishermen, tax collectors, and farmers, likely found themselves preoccupied and struggling to grasp the profundities of Jesus’ teachings. Their ultimate comprehension is realized at Pentecost when they receive the Holy Spirit, illuminating their understanding. The concluding verse of the Gospel passage indicates their ongoing quest for clarity, as they express bewilderment: “Who then is this, that even the wind and the sea obey Him?”
The spiritual journey invites introspection, urging us to consider our trajectory and how God facilitates our growth along the path. Thus, we must reflect on the question Christ poses to us and the inquiries we hold towards Him. Have we arrived at a deeper understanding?
